The Ties That Bind

Natalie Halloway, Elizabeth Smart, Jessie Marie Davis these women are a long list of women who have gone missing. I am not saying that these things are not sad, but does anyone remember Phylicia Moore, Alexis Patterson, Rilya Wilson, Judy Cajuste, or Sharonda Parker. When a person is abducted it is always sad I am not saying anything to the contrary, but the media has it's pick and choose of the stories it airs/prints. Why is it that the stories that get the most attention are about white people. All missing people are important regardless of race there is a racial divide in this country. We as a people should care regardless of race. I don't have much too say I just wanted to give you all something to think about. What are the things that bind us race nationality or as I hope Humanity. I believe that as human beings we share a bond that goes beyond race, religion, nationality. Sometimes it maybe hard to see, but I have no doubt that it exist I really hope that in this millenium that all that hold people together is not race.

We are witnessing a similar news behavior in Philly. Our homicide rate is getting so out of control--one of the highest with a 38% of finding the perpetrator. Why? The majority of these killings are in low income areas, mainly among gangs, black on black crime--people don't give a damn. However, when there are white people killed, it is just so damn terrible...this hypocrisy has got to stop. I am glad you wrote this post--I am tired of the media telling us which race is more important.

You will not get any argument from me. This has been a "bitch" of mine for sometime now.
The media takes the "beautiful" people in their attempt to make a more sensational news story.
We see it in the way they treat sex offenders. Look at all of the "pretty" teachers that get a slap on the wrist, yet if the teacher is a male or an "ugly" female, they get the book thrown at them.
This is just another reason to distrust / question our media. They are not interested in the news but ratings. We also have to blame ourselves because we are the ones tuning in, to watch this crap.
Each missing person, each victim, each criminal should be treated the same way regardless of what they look like or how rich or poor they are.

I think even more disturbing than the abductions is the often end result. Does anyone remember one of the most infamous abductions, Jacob Wetterling? His mom, Patty, is a walking billboard rallying against abduction and for finding abducted children.

That's very interesting and I'm glad you mentioned it. I almost never watch the news and had no idea there was such a disparity. Of course if say, Paris Hilton for example came up missing I guess they would leave no stone unturned.

No worries if you don't get out my way too often. Blogging is supposed to be fun, not an obligation. I just didn't write a comment on your last post because I couldn't think of anything good to write.

I see people posting sympathetic outpourings to little Euro and Euro-American girls as far away as Ireland. I see them on the news, and I see them in the papers.

When I go to Harlem, I'll often see two or three missing signs for girls the same age. They don't get international press coverage.

Your question has an obvious answer. The obvious answer is true, as far as it goes, but there's a lot under the surface.

For people who produce media, the question is who is valued, and whom does the general public identify with.

I had a number of students who worked for media companies (most of the major ones, in fact) around NYC. They would sneak me inter-office memos that spelled out in very frank terms how children, teens, and young adults were to symbolize according to race.

If this is a subject you think about, let me suggest a short (16 pgs) paper: "Different Children, Different Dreams," by Dr. Ellen Seiter (UC San Diego). You most likely can find it at your library in the Journal of Communication Inquiry, Vol. 14 (1990):31-47.

It should not be racial. I would like to see JJ and Al show up at some of these "black on white" hate crimes like the one in Knoxville, TN and numerous others, but they will not.

The Duke case was racial because the community, 88 professors at Duke and the Prosecutor make it one.

There is no explaining it or excuse for it. Either you cover all missing people or you cover none. Most of us don't know these people who are covered 24-7. In my opinion these cases are between their families and the police. Seldom is someone found as a result of the 24-7 coverage.
