I am so embarrassed
The last post I did was about "snitchin". I put up a quote by the rapper Camron. I put it up to show the mentality that we are dealing with. Maybe we could understand so we could help the problem. Then I actually saw the interview, and as a black man I was and am Highly embarrassed. The man said if a serial Killer lived next door to him he would move, and not tell the police. What type of person says something like that? I talked to my father and he told me not to worry about people out of my range, and help the ones in my vicinity, but how can I stand by and let these people corrupt the black community or any other with this ignorance? I feel I would be wrong if I didn't at least speak out. I understand what my father said. I don't yet have the power to affect large numbers. So until I do I will help who I can. What really got me was the children. The boy said that the thing to be concerned over are never backing down in a fight, get money, don't snitch, and stay fresh. So this is the way I See it is the "Stop Snitchin" advocates are staying forget the innocent people who die in the streets of America. forget the world problems and screw the genocidal murders in Africa. No the real problem is the people who cooperate with the police and get criminals off the streets, not enough people have rims and chains, but the most serious problem the world has is that not enough people are fresh. Ridiculous. I have lost respect for another man that is Camron. Again I am highly embarrassed.

No need for you to be embarrassed. The socially conscious among us try to represent our respective social groups well. We try to help and teach and improve the world, and bring others together for a team effort as much as we can. But there's only so much any of us can do. Unfortunately you can't force someone to act right. But you can do exactly what you are doing here - try to minimize and reverse the damage they do. You're doing good work. Never give up.
Yep I agree w/Anne. All you can do is lead by example. It's easy to follow the crowd but when you see that one person stand up and do whats good and right it does inspire people. That's all you can do.
c-dell, i am in a similar position with folks who are too tolerant of hard line religion. i think that the time for tolerance is past- we have to start standing up and making a difference in the places where we live. we may not be able to make a difference all over in one swoop- but standing up for what is right and decent and defending the constitution and freedom- that we all can do. i have the rumblings of a post swirling around- i'll let you know because i want to link to your posts.

I don't think you need be embarassed. You're reacting to comments made in a public sphere within the public sphere itself. If this is something on your mind, then this is the appropriate place to discuss it.
I understood the point you made in the last post. I don't think it's invalid. And perhaps such things should be in public discussion. By posting your reaction, you are stimulating thought on a topic that might have serious ramifications in the future.
I taught media studies at one of our fine colleges here in NYC for many years. The depiction of black people in general has become so narrow that when comments like this are made they do not reflect the opinions of an entire community. Problem is, dominant narrative will assign said values to that community.
I hope you continue to post freely. If it's important to you, then it's important to us. No shame in that.
I'm not going to tell you how to feel, but it sounds like a mistake and you owned up to it, which is more than most people do. They are the ones who should be embarrassed. You are a good man, C-Dell, and I bet it won't be long before you are reaching lots of people. We all do this and that wrong, but if we are on a good path, we learn and others learn with us. It's like Anne said: you can't force others to act right--you can only deal with yourself, and that can be plenty. Personally, I think you are great.

I am lost at why people think they have to apologize for "their race" or what others of "their ethnicity have said. You are "embarrassed" by what this guy said? Why? He is an individual, an American, responsible for his actions, and he does not speak for that of an entire "race" of people.
I just shrug my shoulders when some idiot opens his mouth and shows the world how stupid he really is.

C-Dell, I certainly don't speak for you, but I'm baffled by the people who don't understand, or possibly pretend not to understand, why you would feel embarrassed. I hope you don't mind if I speak to that issue. If you think I'm way off base, then just delete this comment.
It's not right, but in the eyes of many people, we are all ambassadors and examples of our race or social group. If one black person acts like a jerk, you can be sure that plenty of ignorant white people will say You see how black people are? And vice-versa too of course. People tend to notice the bad more than the good, and make up a lot of stuff to boot.
Have you ever been embarrassed in public by an idiot friend or family member who makes your whole group look bad? It's kind of like that.
Like I said, it's not right, but as long as much of our society continues to over-generalize, this condition will persist. It is teamwork and shared responsibility, as well as an unfair burden.

I'm stepping into Brit's corner on this. I understand that no one wants anyone else's errors to be associated with them, but at the same time, we cannot be held responsible for another's words.
We want the best from one another but of course that isn't always possible. We do what we can to make a positive difference.
i have to speak to anne's comment- because i think that she is dead on. whether we like to think of ourselves as enlightened is one thing. reality is quite another. unfortunately, folks of color are lumped together in the eyes of the white western world- whether you are 'black' or 'brown' or 'yellow'- whatever one does- all get blamed for. i am sure that c-dell wouldn't make an ass out of himself the way sharpton or jackson or fifty cent or camron do- but in the eyes of many in this country- he is no different when walking down the street.
as for changes, yes, i have hope that they are coming. why? because of young folks like brit. i see more and more young people reaching across race and seeing people as people. for me- that is hopeful. it will take the young people to do it- because they are the consumers and the believers. as long as they listen to the camrons and the fifty cents- the record companies will continue to make them. it is up to them to lead the way. they just have to find their voice.
